Quick answer: Most eSIM activation failures come down to four things — an unsupported device, a carrier-locked phone, no working internet connection, or a QR code that has already been used. Work through them in that order and you will solve the majority of cases without contacting support.

This guide covers the install and activation stage only. If the plan is already added to your phone and the problem is slow or missing data once you are connected, see our eSIM troubleshooting guide instead.

Four checks before anything else

Before chasing a specific error message, confirm these four basics. They eliminate most causes in under a minute.

  1. Does your phone actually support eSIM? The same model name can ship with different hardware depending on the region it was sold in. If no eSIM option appears in your settings at all, see why eSIM is not showing up in settings.
  2. Is the phone unlocked? A carrier-locked handset will refuse another provider's eSIM. Our guide to unlocked phones and eSIM explains how to check.
  3. Are you online? The eSIM profile is downloaded over the internet. Without a working Wi-Fi connection the install will fail every time.
  4. Has the QR code already been used? Most travel eSIM codes are single-use. Once scanned, deleting the profile or trying it on a second phone often makes the code unusable.

Troubleshooting by symptom

A. The QR code will not scan, or shows as invalid

Either the camera cannot read the code, or it reads it and rejects it.

  • Display the code as large and bright as possible — scanning from a second screen or a printout is more reliable than from the same phone.
  • Scan from the mobile/cellular section of your Settings app, not the general camera app.
  • Confirm the code has not already been redeemed. If you installed it once and deleted the profile, it may no longer work.
  • If scanning is not possible, use the manual activation code your provider supplied and enter the details by hand.

B. "Cannot add cellular plan" or a similar message

The code was accepted but the phone cannot complete the install. This usually points to the network, a lock, or a storage limit.

  • Reconnect to a stable Wi-Fi network and try again. Weak signal, captive-portal hotel Wi-Fi and in-flight Wi-Fi are common culprits.
  • Temporarily turn off VPNs and private relay features.
  • Verify the phone is not carrier-locked.
  • Check whether you have hit the limit on stored eSIM profiles and remove old, unused ones.
  • Restart the phone and try the install once more.

C. The plan was added but you have no service

The eSIM appears in your list of plans, but there are no bars. This is often not a failure at all — it is usually a settings step that has not been completed.

  • Make sure the new line is turned on in your list of cellular plans.
  • Set the eSIM as the line used for mobile data.
  • Turn data roaming on — travel eSIMs frequently require it.
  • Check the APN settings match what your provider specified.
  • Leave network selection on automatic; if nothing connects, select a supported network manually.

If you are running two lines at once, the data-line setting is where most people get stuck. Our dual SIM setup guide covers it in detail.

D. "Unable to connect to the activation server"

Your phone cannot reach the server that hands out the profile. This is almost always a network issue on your side.

  • Switch to a different Wi-Fi network, or tether from another device.
  • Pause VPN, ad-blocking and custom DNS apps.
  • Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • Confirm your phone's date and time are set automatically.

Cases that look like failure but are normal

A surprising share of "activation failed" reports are actually installs that worked exactly as designed.

  • No service before you travel is expected. On plans that connect only at the destination, seeing no signal while still at home is normal.
  • You may need to switch lines on arrival. Some setups require you to manually select the eSIM as your data line once you land.
  • Give it a few minutes. Right after adding a plan, the phone may take a while to find a network. Toggling airplane mode or restarting often resolves it.
  • Calls and SMS may not be included. Data-only plans do not come with a phone number by design. If you need SMS codes, read about eSIMs and SMS verification.

When none of this works

If you still cannot add or activate the plan, gather this information before contacting the seller's support team — it will save a round of back-and-forth.

  • Your exact device model and OS version
  • The precise wording of the error message (a screenshot is ideal)
  • The stage where it stopped: scanning, adding the plan, or connecting to a network
  • Your order number or purchase details

For suspected hardware faults, your device manufacturer's support is the right channel. For unlocking, contact the carrier the phone is tied to — check their official site for current requirements and processing times.

FAQ

Can I reuse an eSIM QR code?

Usually not. Most codes are single-use, and deleting an installed profile can be permanent — the same QR may not restore it. Check the seller's guidance before removing anything.

Should I activate before I leave home?

It depends on the plan. If the validity period starts at activation, switching it on too early wastes days. The safe pattern is to install before departure and activate on arrival — see our guide to eSIM expiry and validity periods.

Can I install an eSIM in airplane mode?

The download needs an internet connection. Airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled can work, but an unstable connection makes failure much more likely.

Will adding an eSIM disable my existing SIM?

No. On a dual SIM device you can keep your home line active alongside the travel eSIM. See how to keep your number while travelling.

Does repeated failure permanently break the eSIM?

Failed attempts alone do not usually void it, but repeatedly deleting and re-adding the profile can exhaust a single-use code. Diagnose the cause before retrying rather than trying the same step again.
