The short answer: "eSIM support" on a mobile router can mean three different things, and only one of them lets you install a travel eSIM you bought yourself. The other two are routers with an eSIM built in that you cannot add to, and routers where the same model number works or does not work depending on the cellular module inside. Before you buy, do not look at the checkmark in a comparison table. Look for whether the manufacturer publishes a procedure for adding your own profile.

"eSIM mobile router" describes three different products
In a comparison table they all get the same checkmark. In the manufacturers' own technical documentation, they do not. Two router makers who publish detailed eSIM documentation, GL.iNet and NETGEAR, spell out the distinction on their own support sites.
1. Routers where you can add your own eSIM profile
This is what most people mean by eSIM support. You register the QR code or activation code from the eSIM you purchased, using either the router's admin panel or the manufacturer's app. GL.iNet exposes this as APPLICATIONS > eSIM Management in the router's web admin panel, and documents that a purchased profile is added by uploading it "via a QR code or activation code." NETGEAR documents an equivalent flow through its app.
On this class of device the admin panel typically shows the EID (the globally unique identifier of the eSIM chip), the storage available on the eUICC, and the number of profiles currently stored. GL.iNet notes that profile sizes differ between carriers, so the number of profiles a given router can hold is not a fixed figure.
2. Routers with an eSIM built in that you cannot add to
This is where most of the confusion lives. "Has an eSIM" and "accepts your eSIM" are not the same claim.
GL.iNet's own compatibility table states that the GL-E5800 (Mudi 7) "comes with a built-in eSIM. Therefore, the eSIM physical card will be recognized as a regular SIM card without eSIM functionality on Mudi 7." The same table lists the vSIM variant of the GL-E750V2 as not supporting eSIM functionality at all. The pattern is worth noting: the more a device ships with connectivity already baked in, the less room there is for a profile you chose.
Devices marketed as "no SIM card needed, works out of the box" often fall into this category. That design is convenient, but the trade-off is that there is no path for bringing your own travel eSIM. When a spec sheet says "eSIM," check whether it means an embedded plan the vendor controls or a slot you can fill.
3. Routers where the same model number behaves differently
The third case cannot be resolved from the model number alone. GL.iNet documents that for the GL-E750, GL-XE300, GL-X750 and GL-X300B, "the module you use determines whether they can work with the eSIM physical card." Units with EC25 or EG25-G modules need eSIM-capable firmware installed first. Units with the EP06-A module do not support it at all, because "the Qualcomm software lacks the required AT command support."
You cannot see any of this from the outside of the box, which matters most when buying used or through a grey-market reseller. Assume two units of the same model can behave differently and check the manufacturer's table against the module actually fitted.
An eSIM QR code you already scanned on your phone will not install on a router
Reusing a leftover phone eSIM in a router is the obvious idea, and it generally does not work. This is a property of the technology rather than a vendor policy.
Apple's enterprise deployment documentation states that eSIMs "can't be cloned or modified, and they're designed to operate only on a specific device," and gives the reason: "By design, the GSMA eSIM specification SGP.21 restricts eSIM profiles from being exported from one eUICC to another." The eUICC is the eSIM chip inside a device. Pulling a profile out of a phone and dropping it into a router is not something the specification contemplates.
Installation counts point the same way. GL.iNet's troubleshooting guide asks you to check whether the profile or QR code "has already been activated or installed on another device," and states plainly that "most eSIM profiles can only be installed once and cannot be activated on multiple devices."
The practical rule is simple. Do not scan the QR code on your phone for an eSIM you intend to use in a router. Scanning it "just to see" spends the one installation you have. Installing an eSIM on a router depends on whether anything has a camera
On a phone you point the camera at a QR code and you are done. A mobile router has no camera, so manufacturers solve this in three different ways.
Upload the QR code image to the admin panel
This is GL.iNet's approach. You save the QR code image you received at purchase, log in to the router's admin panel in a browser (at 192.168.8.1), and upload the image from the eSIM Management screen. That means you need to keep the image file, so save the attachment from the confirmation email rather than relying on being able to view it later.
Let the manufacturer's app scan on the router's behalf
NETGEAR uses this model. You connect a phone to the router's WiFi network, open the NETGEAR app, select the hotspot, tap My SIMs, choose Add My Own eSIM, and scan the QR code with the phone's camera. The phone is only acting as a scanner; the profile lands on the router.
Note that NETGEAR's eSIM articles list the Nighthawk M7 (MH7150) as the applicable model. A procedure existing for one generation of a product line does not mean it exists for yours. Search the manufacturer's support site for your exact model number and confirm it appears in the article.
When typing the code by hand, check that it starts with "LPA:"
Sometimes all you have is a text activation code. GL.iNet documents the failure most people hit here: "A properly formatted QR code will display an activation code that starts with LPA:. However, some non-standard QR codes may only provide a raw activation code without the LPA prefix. In this case, manually add LPA: at the beginning of the code before clicking the Install button."
So if your provider handed you a string beginning with something like 1$ and the router rejects it, prefixing LPA: may be the entire fix. Trying to install the eSIM after you land is where routers fail
This is the most common failure, and it is structural. An eSIM profile is downloaded over the internet. To put an eSIM into a router, the router already has to be online. You need connectivity to get connectivity.
GL.iNet's troubleshooting article puts "Make sure the router is connected to the Internet" first on its list, noting that an unstable network can cause the router to fail to retrieve and install the profile. Its suggested workaround is to connect the router to another network source, such as a phone's hotspot or a public WiFi network, and retry the upload. The same article suggests switching to a public DNS resolver and temporarily disabling ad-blocking on the router if the download still fails.
Manufacturers design around this. GL.iNet ships its eSIM card with a small seed data allowance and explains its purpose directly: it is "designed for downloading new eSIM profiles when you arrive at a destination with no internet access." The hardware vendor is budgeting for exactly this chicken-and-egg problem.

The eSIM itself also has to be usable in a mobile hotspot
Everything above is about the hardware. The eSIM has conditions too, and router manufacturers explicitly decline to guarantee them.
NETGEAR's support article states: "If you use your own third-party eSIM or physical SIM card for cellular data, check with your carrier to make sure it's valid, activated, and compatible with mobile hotspot devices. NETGEAR cannot guarantee compatibility with eSIMs or SIM cards purchased from other vendors." Note also the phrase NETGEAR uses elsewhere: "hotspot-capable eSIM." The wording assumes some eSIMs are and some are not.
GL.iNet says the same about profiles bought outside its recommended stores, stating it cannot guarantee full compatibility with its routers and that such purchases are made at the buyer's discretion.
This is the same question as tethering on a phone. Travel eSIMs differ in how they treat sharing: some allow it explicitly, some allow it with conditions, some say nothing. One more hardware check: the router's supported bands versus the bands used where you are going. Routers often support a narrower set of bands than phones, and a correctly installed profile is worthless if the device cannot reach the local network. Five things to confirm before using an eSIM in a mobile router
- Can you add your own profile to this router? Not "does it have an eSIM" but "does the manufacturer publish a procedure for registering a QR code or activation code," with your model number named in that article
- Which cellular module is fitted? Documented cases exist where the same model number is supported or unsupported depending on the module. This matters most for used and grey-market units
- How does the QR code get in? If it uploads to an admin panel, you must keep the image file. If it goes through an app, confirm the app supports your model
- Is the eSIM you are buying intended for hotspot devices? Sharing rules vary by product, and hardware makers do not guarantee compatibility
- Can you install before departure? Downloading a profile requires connectivity. Validity periods also start at different points, so read do eSIMs expire before choosing your install date
Buying hardware before answering these leaves you with nothing to adjust once you have landed. What separates them is not published on retail pages; it is published in manufacturer documentation, model by model, with reasons. Reading a different page is the whole fix.
Then there is the question of whether the extra device earns its place. Profiles cannot move between devices, so an eSIM installed in a router is locked to that router.
