  3. Put a different SIM in the original phone. If the other SIM connects, the handset is fine and the SIM failure is confirmed. If it also fails, the problem is the device. Apple notes that if the warning persists at this point, the device may need service.

An eSIM cannot be swap-tested, which makes diagnosis harder

There is no way to pull an eSIM out and try it in another phone. Apple's guidance for eSIM users seeing the same warning ends in a single instruction: contact your carrier. What replacing a SIM card costs and how it works

  • NTT DOCOMO: as of the revision effective 5 September 2025, SIM and eSIM reissue handled at a shop, a mass retailer, an agent, or by phone rose from 3,850 yen to 4,950 yen including tax. The same notice states that administrative fees for web-based procedures were excluded from the revision and remain free.
  • au: SIM card reissue is filed at a store, costs 4,950 yen including tax, and is billed the following month. You need the device in use, the SIM card where it still exists, and photo identification.
  • SoftBank: as of the revision effective 21 January 2026, web-based reissue costs 1,100 yen for a USIM card and is free for an eSIM. In-store reissue is 4,950 yen.

The absolute numbers matter less than the direction they all move in. Every carrier pushed counter and phone service toward roughly 5,000 yen while holding web-only eSIM reissue at free or near-free. The cost of manufacturing and shipping a physical card is surfacing directly as a price gap.

A physical SIM that fails abroad cannot be replaced where you are

An eSIM does not fail, but erasing one cannot be undone

Apple states that if you erase an eSIM you will need to contact your carrier to obtain a new one. It goes further and warns that you should not erase an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless your carrier directly instructs you to. In other words, the instinct carried over from physical SIMs — pull everything out and put it back — becomes the worst available move. A physical card can be reseated indefinitely; an erased eSIM profile cannot be undone. Frequently asked questions

If my SIM card fails, do I lose my contacts and photos?

Under normal modern usage, no. Contacts and photos live on the device or in cloud storage and are unaffected by SIM failure. What the SIM holds is primarily the credentials that identify your subscription. The exception is an older setup that saved contacts to the SIM itself, in which case those specific entries may become unreadable.

Will my phone number change?
