If the Netflix mobile app is set to "Save Data," Netflix's own figure is roughly 6 hours of viewing per GB. The default "Automatic" setting gives about 4 hours per GB, and "Maximum Data" can consume more than 1 GB in 20 minutes. The number of gigabytes per hour is decided by a setting, not by the show, and whether your travel eSIM plan is large enough is settled almost entirely by whether you opened that one screen before departure.
There is a second assumption worth checking. Netflix's Help Center states that downloaded titles "may not be available to watch while you are in another country." Downloading everything before you fly is not the guaranteed zero-data solution it is usually described as.
Netflix data usage runs on two separate scales, and your eSIM only sees one

Browser settings are per profile. Netflix lists "Low: up to 0.3 GB per hour," "Medium: up to 0.7 GB per hour," and "High: up to 1 GB for standard definition, up to 3 GB for HD, up to 7 GB for UHD 4K." "Auto" adjusts to the speed of your connection. The widely quoted 1/3/7 GB figures are the breakdown of that "High" option and are not the smartphone app default. They only matter to you if you watch on a laptop or hotel TV fed by your eSIM hotspot.
Estimating your eSIM plan in hours of Netflix
Applying Netflix's own figures to a one-hour-a-day, seven-day trip:
- Save Data — about 1.2 GB for seven hours
- Automatic — about 1.8 GB for seven hours
- Maximum Data — 21 GB or more for seven hours
If most of your viewing happens in transit and you can hold the "Save Data" setting, Netflix is not a reason to buy a larger plan. Left on "Maximum Data," it will crowd out the maps, searches and messages that the trip actually depends on. Pair this with Zoom's data usage and Spotify's data usage to get a realistic daily total before you choose.
Downloads are not the safety net they are sold as
"Download before you fly and you use no data" is only half true. Netflix documents several limits.
Crossing a border can stop playback
Netflix states that the titles, audio and subtitle options available for streaming and download vary by country, and that downloaded titles may not be available to watch while you are in another country. Nothing guarantees that a title downloaded at home will play at your destination. The maturity ratings of the country you are in also apply.
Download limits differ by plan
Ad-free plans allow up to 100 titles per device, based on the number of devices included in the plan. Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 titles per month. Some titles also cap how many times they can be downloaded in a year. For a long trip built around a series, that difference matters.
Expiry and sign-in
Downloads expire after a period and then show an expiry message, and offline playback still requires the account to be signed in. Downloading close to departure and watching it in transit is the practical pattern.
The Netflix settings to fix before an eSIM trip
There are only three screens to touch.
- Set data usage to Save Data: My Netflix, then your profile name, then App Settings, then Cellular Data Usage.
- Check download video quality. Netflix says Standard downloads faster and uses less storage, while Higher plays back at up to 1080p or HD but takes longer to download and uses more storage. For watching on a phone in transit, Standard is enough.
- Know where the Wi-Fi Only download switch is. By default the app downloads only on Wi-Fi; you can turn that off in App Settings to download over cellular. Note that the setting cannot be changed while downloads are pending.
