Turn your camera off and audio-only drops that to around 54 to 72MB per hour. These figures come from Zoom's own published bandwidth requirements, with upload and download added together. That last part matters: mobile networks and travel eSIMs count data in both directions, so if you size a plan from a one-way number you will underestimate by roughly half.

How much data Zoom uses per hour

Zoom publishes its bandwidth requirements in Mbps by meeting type. To convert to data per hour, use Mbps × 3600 ÷ 8 = MB. A 1:1 call at 720p needs 1.2Mbps up and 1.2Mbps down, so 2.4 × 3600 ÷ 8 = 1,080MB, or about 1.08GB.

The gallery view rows cover the receiving side only. If your own camera is on, your upload sits on top of that. A 49-tile gallery view while you send 720p works out to roughly 2.7GB per hour.

There is a tier above this. Zoom's technical library lists 1080p at 60fps as 12.8Mbps in each direction, which is about 11.5GB per hour. That is not a setting you would pick for an ordinary meeting, and on a mobile connection it is not realistic at all.

Zoom compared with other apps per hour

Why the common "Zoom uses 0.5GB per hour" figure is off

The widely repeated estimate of about 0.5GB per hour is not wrong, but it holds under narrow conditions. Three things push the real number higher.

  1. Only one direction is counted. Speed guidance is usually written as "you need X Mbps down," and that single figure gets converted to hours. Metered mobile data adds upload and download together.
  2. Standard quality is assumed. The 600kbps figure is standard definition. With HD sending enabled, Zoom aims for 720p or better, which roughly doubles it.
  3. Participant count is ignored. In a group call you send one stream and receive several. Switching to gallery view raises the receive side sharply.

So 0.5GB per hour is a fair estimate for a 1:1 call, at standard quality, counting download only. It does not describe a two-hour four-person meeting from a hotel room overseas.

What fits in 1GB a day and what does not

  • Comfortable: audio-only calls, screen-share-led status updates, a 30-minute 1:1 at standard quality. 1GB leaves headroom.
  • Tight: a 45-minute 1:1 at 720p. Add email and messaging and the day is spent.
  • Not enough: an hour or more of group video. Two hours at 720p needs about 4GB, so a 1GB daily plan throttles mid-meeting.

Plan as if the hotel Wi-Fi will fail you

Hotel Wi-Fi abroad is often fast on download and very thin on upload. When your video freezes for everyone else, or people say your audio is breaking up, upload is almost always the cause. Sending 720p in a group meeting needs 2.6Mbps up, and plenty of shared networks never reach it.

Measure your own Zoom data usage

Zoom's technical library describes its published figures as estimated peak usage and recommends checking the statistics screen for real numbers. In other words, Zoom itself treats the table as an upper bound. Measuring takes a couple of minutes.

  1. During a meeting, open settings and go to Statistics.
  2. Read the send and receive bitrates for video, audio and screen share.
  3. Once the call is stable, add send and receive, convert to Mbps, multiply by 3600 and divide by 8.

Most people find their measured figure lands below the published table, because Zoom drops quality automatically when the network is constrained. The flip side is that a better connection means more data. If your allowance started draining faster after you switched to a faster eSIM, this is why.

Cutting Zoom data usage in order of impact

Plenty of tips circulate, but they are not equal. Work down this list.

  1. Turn your video off. Audio only is about 70MB per hour, roughly one thirtieth of a 720p group call. Nothing else comes close.
  2. Switch gallery view to speaker view. You receive one stream instead of many. Coming down from 49 tiles cuts the receive side to a fraction.
  3. Disable HD video sending. Dropping below 720p on send more than halves your upload. It is in the video settings.
  4. Stop your camera while screen sharing. The share itself is only 50-75kbps; the camera is the expensive part.
  5. Skip virtual backgrounds. Smaller effect than the four above, but it lowers device load and keeps quality steadier.

Hosts have levers too. Starting everyone with video off and distributing documents in advance so screen sharing is brief reduces data for every participant at once.
