The United States has three national mobile operators: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. In Ookla's report for the first half of 2026, T-Mobile led on speed and Verizon led on coverage. T-Mobile's median download speed was 275.55 Mbps, far ahead of second-placed AT&T at 159.3 Mbps. The three also run 5G on different frequencies, so which network you land on, and whether your phone supports its bands, changes how well you stay connected. This guide compares the three using the operators' own information, Ookla and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and shows how to check which network your travel eSIM is using.

USA mobile operators: three networks, and many brands that use them
The three companies with their own nationwide mobile networks are AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Sprint, once a major operator, is now part of T-Mobile, which shut down Sprint's 3G and LTE networks in 2022. The FCC explains that many brands, such as Cricket, Boost and Straight Talk, use AT&T's, Verizon's and T-Mobile's networks.

5G spectrum of the USA mobile operators: T-Mobile on 2.5 GHz, Verizon and AT&T on C-band
The biggest difference between the three is the spectrum they use for 5G. Here is a summary based on each operator's official information.

T-Mobile: a 600 MHz and 2.5 GHz combination
According to T-Mobile's support pages, its wide-area "Extended Range 5G" runs on band n71 (600 MHz), while its faster "Ultra Capacity 5G" uses band n41 (2.5 GHz), n2/n25 (1900 MHz) and mmWave. T-Mobile says Extended Range 5G covers 98% of Americans. In November 2022 it launched Ultra Capacity 5G on its standalone (SA) 5G network nationwide.
Verizon: C-band at the core of 5G Ultra Wideband
Verizon's support pages say 5G Ultra Wideband uses mmWave and C-band spectrum, while 5G Nationwide uses low-band spectrum. C-band is mid-band spectrum between 3.7 and 3.98 GHz; it reaches farther than mmWave and can be used inside buildings.
AT&T: 3.45 GHz added to C-band
AT&T says its low-band 5G covers more than 325 million people in over 28,000 cities and towns, and its mid-band 5G+ covers more than 310 million people. Mid-band 5G+ requires a device that supports band n77. In 2025 AT&T deployed EchoStar's 3.45 GHz spectrum to around 23,000 cell sites, and it closed the purchase of that spectrum in July 2026.
What to check on your phone
Look for n71, n41 and n77 in your phone's official specifications. A phone without 600 MHz support (n71 for 5G, Band 71 for LTE) cannot make full use of T-Mobile's wide-area coverage. A phone without n77 cannot use Verizon's and AT&T's mid-band 5G. AT&T's technical requirements for device makers (October 2025 edition) also list LTE bands 2, 4 and 12, and 5G bands n2, n5, n66 and n77 as mandatory, noting that missing bands lead to significant coverage gaps.
USA mobile operator speeds and coverage: Ookla's H1 2026 report
Ookla assessed US mobile networks from January to June 2026 using consumer-initiated tests. The main published results are below.

T-Mobile was the fastest provider in 47 states, while Verizon led the measure of geographic coverage. The official figures show a clear pattern: T-Mobile is faster, and Verizon covers more ground.
How USA mobile operators differ in rural areas, Hawaii and Alaska
In the same report, Alaska had the slowest median mobile download speed of any state at 49.04 Mbps, followed by Vermont and Hawaii. Among cities, Anchorage was slowest, followed by Honolulu and North Las Vegas. A high national average does not guarantee the same experience everywhere. Check each operator's coverage at your destination on the FCC map
The FCC's National Broadband Map shows mobile coverage as reported by each provider. The FCC evaluates 4G LTE and 5G coverage separately for outdoor stationary use and in-vehicle use. Keep these points in mind:
- Coverage is a prediction based on propagation modeling; real-world service varies with your device, cell site capacity and terrain
- The FCC's 4G LTE map assumes you are outdoors and stationary, and does not cover indoor service
- Operators' own maps may use different assumptions, such as roaming, and may not match the FCC map
Checking before you leave whether only one operator reaches your destination makes it easier to choose a network.
Which USA mobile operator will your travel eSIM use? How to check and switch
Most travel eSIMs connect by using a US operator's network, and the network differs by product. The Coral eSIM USA product page lists AT&T (5G), Verizon (5G) and T-Mobile (5G) as supported networks (as of September 26, 2026). The listing may differ between plans, so check the plan you buy.
- Before buying: check the supported networks on the product page for operator names and 5G support
- Check your phone: confirm n71, n41 and n77 in the specifications. Your phone must also be unlocked (how to check if your phone is unlocked)
- After arrival: on iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, choose your travel line and look at Network Selection to see the current operator. On Google Pixel, go to Settings, then Network & internet, then SIMs, and check Network
- If it is slow or shows no service: if the plan supports several operators, turn off automatic selection and choose another one manually. Try the wider-coverage network outside cities and the faster one in cities
- 5G settings: on iPhone, choose 5G Auto under Voice & Data, or choose LTE to save battery
